Caerdroia (installation 1984 - 1991, 1993)
Seeing Giotto’s amazing Arena Chapel gave me the ambition to make a maze as a work of art, painted all over with seven spaces and seven passageways, ceramic sculptures throughout, with themes of time and change. Although the maze was wood and paint instead of digital bits, it presaged my later work such as Dream Vortex, as a space that one walked into and explored, something to experience with your body as well as your eyes. It developed through several iterations over seven years, and was installed twice, at the Mills Museum (1991) and the Rosicrucian Museum (1993) (shown). In 2026, I started a two-year project to refresh and reinstall it as the site of a performance video in line with my most recent work..
